KBNERR and partners engaged officials and local communities through August events highlighting stewardship of salmon habitat.
This summer, staff from Senator Lisa Murkowski‘s office, State Sen. Gary Stevens‘ office, and the KPB Assembly President joined the Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve staff and community council alongside the Kachemak Heritage Land Trust to learn how important healthy watersheds are for salmon. Alaska elected officials and legislative staff experienced a “Fish Need Land Too” field trip where they got to see firsthand how healthy land feeds healthy streams & learn all the science behind it, and talk about how conserving land protects fish habitat for the benefit of Alaskan communities.
On August 10th we celebrated Alaska Wild Salmon Day, a holiday established to honor the vital role of wild salmon in Alaska’s culture, economy, and ways of life. With Kenai Peninsula Fish Habitat Partnership friends from Kenai Watershed Forum and Kachemak Heritage Land Trust we talked with Kenai Peninsula Fairgoers about living in salmon landscapes, and learned through salmon habitat games.
