Kachemak Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve’s Education Program has been busy with the start of school. We have been working with McNeil Elementary School to teach about invasive species monitoring and Homer Flex High School’s marine biology class both in the classroom and in the field.
Discovery Labs: In August, in partnership with the Kachemak Bay Environmental Educators Alliance (KBEEA), KBNERR hosted a Discovery Lab on Terrestrial Habitats with a focus on salt marsh plants, beaver dam analogs, and groundwater hydrology. We have a Marine Mammal Discover Lab coming up on Sept. 27th. Event Flyer.
KBNERR is hosting the fall KBEEA All Hands Meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 17th from 12-2pm.
We are hosting a Teachers on the Estuary Training (TOTE) in partnership with the Smithsonian Research Center, The Pratt Museum, Cook Inletkeeper, and the Kenai Peninsula School District in mid Sept. Learn more, designed for 4th – 10th grade educators.
Our new Semester by the Bay Intern, Chloe Atkins, has been busy helping with all of the field trips to share KBNERR’s local, place-based science with the students learning about their own backyards throughout the Kachemak Bay region.
